January 30th

Dear CBB Widdy Voters.
Today, as you may or may not have noticed is January 30th. Our dear friends at wikisubscribes would like you to note that this date is slightly more likely to fall on a Monday, Wednesday or Saturday (58 in 400 years each) than on Thursday or Friday (57), and slightly less likely to occur on a Tuesday or Sunday (56).
Today being a Tuesday, therefore makes it a quite remarkable Tuesday, for reasons that many might not have remarked upon and probably still won't.
In this date in 1908, Indian pacifist and leader Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was released from prison by Jan C. Smuts after being tried and sentenced to two months in jail earlier in the month. Exactly 40 years later, on this date in 1948 that same man, now known as Mahatma Gandhi, was assassinated by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu extremist.
Hindu extremism has a neologism, used to describe acts of violence motivated by Hindu nationalism. That neologism is "Saffron terror." Saffron Terror is, of course, very different from Saffron Walden, mainly on account of Saffron Walden being a market town in the Uttlesford district of Essex, which isn't the slightest bit terrifying, unless of course you are terrified about the prospect of nothing much ever happening, because, well, nothing much ever really does nowadays.
Things were very different in Saffron Walden during the 17th Century, however, when it was at the centre of the Eastern Association during the English Civil War. While the town was the headquarters of the New Model Army, Lieutenant-General of Horse, Oliver Cromwell paid a 19-day visit in May 1647, taking part in debates to seek a settlement between Parliament and the army. He is thought to have stayed at the Sun Inn.
A little under 2 years later, on this day, January 30th 1649, King Charles I of England was beheaded. Twelve years later, on January 30th 1661, that very same Oliver Cromwell, now known as the Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, was ritually executed (more than two years after his previous death), on the 12th anniversary of the execution of the monarch that he himself deposed.
And that, dear reader, is how the Saffron Walden became a direct link between Mahatma Gandhi and Oliver Cromwell
