Does a pencil fit in the hole?

Not a pencil. The hole is too small for that but something goes in there.

Something that wants to be held (reasonably) tight while being simple&easy to adjust? Like cords or laces. I've not seen such beasties in chunky metal, but somewhere weight is not an issue (e.g. designed to be carried around in a car) one might imagine such a beastie.

Does a cable fit in the middle bit? Possibly for feeding cable through ducting?

It works in a similar way (squeeze the ends together to line up the holes in the inner and outer part of the spindle to allow something to be inserted or moved). It is not for a cord or rope etc., however. The rollers are important.

Not for cable. It is for something rigid, not flexible.

Rather simple drill sharpening tool? Or for sharpening the point of an automatic centre punch?

Not for any of those. Whatever goes in the hole will be held in that position so the tool could not be used to hone a rounded point.

XFool wrote:Google image tells me...

Hey, that's cheating!

I have never heard of them being called pop up push buttons before, maybe pop-up something-else. I think the points should go to whoever can give me a bit more information (maybe a description or alternative name) without cheating :)

Keep guessing and I will leave more clues.

Yes, it is for sharpening screwdrivers. specifically, it is for sharpening watchmakers' screwdrivers.

Click-clack plug.

They are mechanisms for what I know of as click clack wastes.

You will see from the photograph in the OP that there are two different types of brass ones. I have also seen plastic ones although brass are more common.

Well done everyone, I hope you enjoyed identifying the mystery objects. I will see if I can find ten more for you to identify.

How does it function, given the rollers etc?

It is used as a honing guide with a stone. The rollers can run on the stone itself but narrow stones are available in wooden holders so that the rollers run on the wood each side of the stone.
The screwdriver is inserted into the hole (squeeze the rollers toward each other, insert the screwdriver, then release).

Thanks. You can tell I'm not technically minded but I've enjoyed the thread.
