Shellfish, of course.

It's the seafood diet we both share. We see food, we eat it.

(Sorry, just finished my food. The curry wasn't one of my better efforts, but the wine was nice).

Correct answer kempiejon, it is for stripping wire. The minimum size it will strip easily is probably about 10 sq mm. It slits the insulation as it is pulled along the wire.

Nothing like that. It has quite an obscure use which you are unlikely to guess by looking at it. You need the clues.

The fish joke was not a red herring.

It's used by a piano tuna?

Is the person who uses number 5 a piano tuner?

Yes, it is used by a piano tuner.

I tried to drop a few subtle clues:

Can anyone suggest what it is used for?

It's a treble mute for muting the middle string of a three-string treble
Apparently :-)

Otherwise known as a Papps wedge. It is used when tuning upright pianos.

The highest notes on a piano have three strings each. The Papps wedge is inserted so that it damps two of the strings while the other string is tuned. The wedge is then moved so that it damps only one string and the second string is tuned to the first. Finally, the wedge is removed altogether and the third string is tuned to the first two.

Some notes have two strings and these are tuned using the Papps wedge in a similar way. The lowest notes have one string each.

It is actually just the wrong way around, not upturned. (The claw should be on the ground.) It is not garden-related.

My apologies, I have looked at it again and it is upside-down (almost). The curved part at the bottom would have been at the top.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't do too well on the tuna, so how about another attempt on this one. A support of some sort?

Perhaps to hold up a large piece of timber or a fountain. As before, mere guesses but enjoyable all the same.

1) to take off boots? Or scrape off mud from boots?

(if the object is upside down)

Not timber or a fountain but it does support something.

Not for mud scraping.

Interesting, I thought of a mud scraper earlier but rejected it. Whereas you didn't reply it was nothing to do with boots.

I can't tell the dimensions but is it a boot stand or something equine related?

Wrong again no doubt.
