We've had the air to air unit on a couple of evenings this week. Certainly chillier than last year.

Indeed, that's been known for a long time. The theory is that melting of the Greenland ice cap (which holds about 90% of the world's fresh water outside Antarctica) could disrupt the current that has historically kept us exceptionally mild for our latitude.

Food for thought: I wrote about that when I was part of an educational project around 1998. The teenagers whose schools participated in that project must now be in their 40s. Though sadly we had little interest from the UK for this, erm, European (but much wider than just EU) space science project.

63F in the sitting room. Last night we toughed it out at 64F.
But we put the counterpane back on the bed.

I promise not to complain if it gets hot.

Routinely 16C in the morning hee, not too bad as we're moving.

In the evenings it is about 62-3 so supplemental heat required.

The joys of old houses with thick walls - they don't really warm up until August.

I think you're going to have to explain to this ignorant earthling how the movement of even a magnetic force like the moon can affect the migration of low pressure areas down here on planet earth. Shurely it's got more to do with terrestrial forces such as El Nino and La Nina knocking nine bells out of the jetstream?

With a side order of global warming, just to make things more interesting. But, like Bugs Bunny, I'm all ears.

My mum is 88 and uses Celsius.

But each to their own. I guess that a knowledge of Fahrenheit may be important in the USA and to some doctors here when keeping those leeches alive.

There's a fella on the youtubes, he's an engineer uses metric and knowing there's an America audience as well as rest of the world and he describes boiling for them as 100 degrees science

Fahrenheit, Celsius it's all the same when you get to -40. Look it up.

On the subject of choice of units, I use whatever is appropriate either to the job or the audience. I use Celsius, Fahrenheit or Gas mark. Grams, ounces or cups. My point was that mixing units really DOES NOT WORK.

Translating units is in my opinion just as bad.

Apparently normal body temperature is 98.6F !!!
Come on! not 98F (36.6C) or 99F (37.2C), Why, and could you tell the difference on a mercury or alcohol thermometer? Would a degree F or half C make a medical difference?

Well we could assume that it's an average, but the truth is a LOT simpler. 37C is exactly 98.6F.
It's an approximation in Celsius that has been "accurately" translated to Fahrenheit.
