I have found that 'doing nothing' takes a little getting used to, as newspapers and business TV are always tempting us to re-balance, buy a hot stock or sell a loser. Everyone gains when you trade - except you.

A strategy of buying and holding for the long term - preferably 20 years+, should helpfully concentrate one's mind in the buying phase.

By the way, Foreign and Colonial Investment Trust has a portfolio of about 500 listed stocks from all corners of the world, and in addition has about 10% private equity. It's benchmark is the MSCI World Equity Index.

Before buying an investment trust, I would always 'look under the bonnet' and never rely on a few years' past performance data.
