Funnily enough, I pondered on this matter in that past. I came to the conclusion that the 'ideal' software designer/programmer would likely need to combine two seemingly contradictory characteristics:

1. Be on the autistic spectrum.

2. Be good at seeing things from another person's pov.

14 days on a ships rudder trying to get to Europe

Ok, they ended up in Brazil....bad luck. This might be a controversial view....but if this ship ended up in a UK port... ...Well...just give them a bloody job eh? They want to work. They need to work.

I was following the story last night about the Pakistan cable-car incident, and was glad to see that all occupants managed to get down safely.

It wasn't until today, however, that I became fully aware of just what a precarious position they were in as they travelled over their valley -

Image

The BBC story linked below, from which the above photo is taken, shows some drone footage of their position whilst they awaited rescue -

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-asia-66597447

It's no wonder the rescuers were taking extra care with their approaches!

Cheers,

Itsallaguess

Very scary. And I saw saw video on the news last night that people travel in these things with the doors open, as in the photo. Our Health and Safety people would be slightly unhappy with that.

We've all seen the trains in India. Theres more on the outside then inside.

A few years ago the Indian government looked at the 700mph vacuum tubed 'Hyperloop' between 2 of their major cities. One of the comments below the article said 'let's see the f*****s hang to the outside of that'

I think I'd have got off and walked if I knew he was on the plane...

What took them so long? Perhaps they wanted to make it look like an accident

There's talk of connecting Europe to India with that kind of fast train.

My thought: that'll have to go through some serious earthquake country, and regions of political tension :o

But great for freight that would otherwise fly.

I've quite enjoyed the athletics World Championships - not least the plucky Brit stuffing it to the arrogant Norwegian last night in the mens 1500 meters.

I've really enjoyed them handing out the medals on the finish line instead of the dreary podiums / national anthems etc. It makes it seem more like the glorified school sports day that it actually is.

I still don't like the winners being draped in national flags (from the look of it, its actually the assembled journos that give out the flag for their photo opportunities)

But I really don't like this:

World Championships 2023: Katie Moon and Nina Kennedy share pole vault gold medal in Budapest

I think a couple of high jumpers did this a few years back and I felt the same way. It's a competition. There can only be one winner. Screw all this nicey-nicey sharing the win crap. If it can't be decided with their chosen sport then let them choose their weapon and fight it out - to the death if need be.

OB Joke

A man gets on the tube during the 2012 Olympics wearing a tracksuit and carrying a 20 foot long holdall.

One curious member of the public asks 'Are you a pole vaulter?'

The athlete replied 'Naw, I'm a German - but how did you know my name was Walter?'

Coutersy - W Connolly.

What a good idea. It might also sharpen their resolve to win by a clear margin in the first place.

It's not instead of, it's as well as. They, as you say, get draped with the medal on the track immediately after the event but they then have to hand it back for it to get their name engraved onto it, and then the next day it is formally re-draped on them on a podium (well, stage) in "Medal Plaza" in the stadium park, at the end of which national flags are hoisted and the winners get their national anthem played while there's replays of their on-track celebrations.

Here's the Mixed 4X400 Meter Relay Medal Ceremony: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mai6tvZFK44
