I have 'googled' but every suggestion is for a 'buy it'/sell it' wording

surely there must be an acceptable easy wording for a very simple change in a bequest

ie
I dont want my bequest but want my kids to have it

hardly controvertial and affects no one else but me!!

any pointers please

I don't think there's a specific format that it has to be - it can be a letter as long as it has the right content. There are instructions and a link to a checklist here https://www.gov.uk/alter-a-will-after-a-death

Not an answer to the question but rather an alert as to whether a deed of variation is required. Many wills leave bequests to the children of a beneficiary if the beneficiary doesn't inherit. I such cases a disclaimer of the bequest is simpler than a deed of variation.
