Release of Legal Charge over Property
Having repaid an outstanding mortgage debt I am looking to have the Legal Charge removed. This looks a straightforward request requiring the (part) completion of a DS1 form (the mortgagee completing the remainder and sending on to the land registry). Do I need to involve a solicitor for this given the simplicity? Has anyone done this themselves?

Yes I filled in a DS1 sent it off to the mortgage lender to complete and process. Very easy. No solicitor required.

If it's a mortgage from a mainstream lender you shouldn't have to use a DS1.
Most institutional lenders use something called END (Electronic Notification of Discharge) which they transmit electronically to the Land Registry. This would normally be done automatically, without you having to request it.

Re: Release of Legal Charge over Property
I was of the opinion that my lender was not happy with me paying off my mortgage early. They insisted on me providing a completed DS1 to them.
I had no problem obtaining a form and completing it so as it turned out it caused me no problems and just the cost of a first class stamp.
I've had a dislike of any bank ever since.
