As an aside, when I paid my mortgage off 20+ years, I received all my deeds from the bank who was the mortgagor.
They offered to store the deeds at a fee. I considered it better value to invest in a fireproof (retardant) box at about £30 at the time from a chain stationery store and have saved £'s since.
If things should go wrong at least it's now my responsibility rather than go through all the stress the OP has.
